2016, A Year like No Other

Men and women wiser than I have been speaking of late regarding the year to come.  Some profess to have insight from the Holy One of Israel about events that will unfold and I have no reason to doubt their words. Who am I to judge another person’s spiritual connection with the Lord of heaven and earth?  I am not a prophet nor a sage.

But I am a child and servant of God and it is only in that context that I share with you my thoughts about 2016.

In my personal prayer times, two words have been coming to me repeatedly: Change and Truth.

Change is difficult for many people, and at the very least, annoying to others.  We like our routines, our comfort zones.  Yet we are also the generation that has seen more change in our lifetime than any previous generation in human history.  Just days ago, I posted to Facebook a chart of the profound changes that have occurred in the past one hundred years, the most dramatic being in the past seventy years.  We marvel as new technologies are introduced and wonder what more could be forthcoming.

Hold on to your hats! Profound changes are yet to come, not from scientific advancement or political movements but from the Sovereign King of the Universe whose purpose and plan for the Redemption of all humanity is far and above any plans and purposes conceived by the human intellect.

I believe that we will see vast CHANGE in 2016, individually, nationally and internationally.  Unexpected, surprising, even shocking changes beyond what we may have anticipated or dreamed possible, but the TRUTH in the midst of destabilizing CHANGE will be this: nothing takes Him by surprise and He is able and more than willing to be our stability, our peace and our strength through whatever we may have to face.

CHANGE without purpose produces stress; CHANGE with purpose produces growth. The purposes of God in your life and mine is that every experience we have in this life will serve as an agent of transformation, an opportunity for us to grow in His image and likeness.

The TRUTH that will sustain us throughout the year to come is that the God of Heaven and Earth, the Lord God Almighty, is a covenant keeping God.  His Word is True, His promises secure.  He is our Light in darkness, our Comfort in Sorrow, our Strength in weakness and our Security in chaos.

I submit to you that perhaps one of our favorite prayers in the year to come should be Psalm 91.  Don’t just read it; pray it. Here’s a sample of my ‘personalized’ version.

I choose to dwell in the shelter of the Most High and abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, ‘You are my refuge and my strength; my God in Whom I trust.’ For it is You who deliver me from every trap and from deadly disease.

You will cover me with Your feathers and under Your wings I will take refuge.  Your faithfulness is my shield and my armour.  (you get the idea!)

2016 will be a year for us to emulate the FAITH of the three young men in the fiery furnace. (Daniel 3)  Faced with bowing to an idol in order to escape a fearsome judgment, they replied:

Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O King. But even if He doesn’t, let it be known to you, O King, that we will not bow to your gods..

May their faith, along with the faith of so many recent martyrs beheaded for their unwillingness to bow to another god, inspire and strengthen us.  The time is now for bold, fearless and faithful servants of the Holy One of Israel.

May 2016 be a year like no other for you – may you and I grow in faith, in courage and most of all, in love for Him and for one another.

To a spiritually successful 2016!
